Dr. Ken Tompkins began his Hampton Roads Dermatology career as the “Champus partnership” provider at Fort Monroe. In 1994, he left the military base and formally established Tompkins Dermatology. A year later, the practice was expanded to the Kempsville section of Virginia Beach when he purchased the Dermatology practice of the retiring Dr. Marie Miot.
When Dr. Bebe Edmonds joined the practice in 1996, the Kempsville office moved to its current location on Providence Road, which was a much larger facility, and the practice quickly expanded. Perceiving an acute need for services in the Outer Banks, Dr. Tompkins began to practice in Kitty Hawk, sharing space in Chesapeake General Hospital’s satellite office.
Dr. Tompkins was the only dermatologist in the Outer Banks for nearly 8 years, supporting a large and very sun-damaged population. With the ever increasing need for advanced surgical treatment of skin cancer, Dr. Padman Menon, Mohs’s surgeon, joined the practice in 2003.
The latest addition to our staff of physicians occurred in August of 2016 when Dr. Heffernan-Stroud joined the practice at our Outer Banks offices. Dr. Heffernan-Stroud practices general dermatology with a focus on the treatment and prevention of skin cancer at both the Nags Head and Kitty Hawk offices.
To complement our group of physicians, our staff includes four extremely well qualified and experienced Physician Assistants. In 2005, Tim Jackson joined our practice, followed by Kimberly Silver in 2008. Our practice was further expanded with the addition of Melissa Thierry in 2012, followed by Caroline Conkwright in 2014.
Always with an eye toward serving our community in the future, we welcome suggestions to improve our scope of dermatologic care.
